자유의지(freien Willen, free will)에 관한 진리를 아는 것은 매우 중요하다.(WA 609-614)
자유의지 주제에 대한 논의는 에라스무스와 중요한 주제 토론입니다. 루터는 에라스무스가 그리스도의 경건에서 그리스도 없이도 가능할 것으로 생각한다고 평가하며 비판했다. 하나님은 본성 상 가장 자비로우신 분이다. 루터는 에라스무스는 루키안적 사유 체계, 에피쿠로스 학파적 사유 체계로 평가했다.

사모사타의 루키안(Lucian of Samosata, ca.125-180/190)은 『알렉산더,. 그 거짓 선지자』라는 책을 켈수스에게 헌정했다. 이 책에 보면 켈수스는 루키안의 친구이자 에피쿠로스 학파의 인물로 묘사된다. AD 245-48년경, 알렉산드리아의 오리게네스(Origenes, 185-254)는 『켈수스에 반대하여』 (Contra Celsum)라는 작품을 펴냈다. 서명(書名)에서 암시 하듯, 켈수스(Celsus, AD 2세기)라는 이교도 철학자의 기독교 비판을 재비판한 작품이다. 루터는 에라스무스가 하나님에 관한 지식의 모호성을 미덕으로 삼는다고 비판한 것이다. 진리에 대해서 모호한 태도를 갖는 것은 플라톤과 소크라테스가 취한 방법이다. 철학적 방법을 기독교의 본질을 말할 때 사용하는 것은 바람직하지 않다.
루터는 교황주의자들이 자기를 비판하는 글이면 무조건 옹호하고 지지한다고 비판했다. 루터는 에라스무스의 글이 루터를 배격하지 성향이 드러나지 않았다면, 그들의 손에 갈기갈기 찢어질 내용이라고 평가했다.
루터가 설명하는 기독교와 에라스무스가 설명하는 기독교가 일치하지 않는다. 루터가 설명하는 기독교는 "우리는 전력을 다해 노력하고 회개의 치료를 간구하며, 모든 수단을 동원해 하나님의 은혜를 갈망해야 하며, 하나님의 은혜 없이는 어떠한 인간의 의지나 노력도 효력을 발휘하지 못한다는 것, 또한 본질적으로 자비 그 자체이신 하나님에게서 용서를 받는 일에 어느 누구도 절망해서는 안 된다는 것을 포함한다. 그리스도도 성령도 결여된 당신의 이와 같은 말들은 얼음 자체보다더 차갑다.
The "form" of Christianity set forth by you, among other things, has this "That we should strive with all our powers, have recourse to the remedy of repentance, and in all ways try to gain the mercy of God; without which, neither human will, nor endeavor, effectual." Also, "that no one should despair of pardon from a God by nature most merciful."
These statements of yours are without Christ, without the Spirit, and more cold than ice, so that, the beauty of your eloquence is really deformed by them. But what they assert is this: That there is ability in us; that there is a striving with all our powers; that there is mercy in God; that there are ways of gaining that mercy; that there is a God, by nature just, and most merciful, etc.
루터는 구원에서 회의적인 에라스무스에 대해서 명확하게 지적한다. 루터는 구원에서 수동성을 명확하게 제시하며, 하나님의 은혜, 하나님의 자비를 명확하게 세운다. 그리고 인간 의지의 능동성을 말하는 것을 부당하게 제시한다. 루터는 구원에서 오직 하나님의 자비(God's mercy)를 제시한다.
